Mike Cohen

Michael A. Cohen is Principal of Cohen Strategic Consulting and author of “Better Behavior + Better Decisions = Less Risk“. He advises insurers on optimizing their relationships with the rating agencies and assists companies to improve their performance by providing innovative solutions in the areas of strategy and business development, enterprise risk management, mergers and acquisitions, and competitive tactics, leveraging his 30 years of successful and increasingly responsible insurance industry and management experience.

Prior to founding his firm, Mr. Cohen was Executive Vice President, Business Development at Security Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York. He ran Security Mutual’s Traditional Life and Benefits businesses, which realized double-digit sales growth and strong profitability, and led the company’s strategic planning and enterprise risk management efforts. A member of Security Mutual’s senior management team, he provided direction for all operations of the company.

Previously, Mr. Cohen was Vice President at A. M. Best Company, where for several years he headed the U. S. life insurance rating division that analyzed and rated that entire industry, evaluating the financial strength, operating performance and business profiles of those companies. As one of the senior officers in the ratings division at A. M. Best, he was a member of the committee that determined claims paying and debt ratings for all insurance organizations worldwide. In his role, Cohen introduced ERM as an integral component of A. M. Best’s rating methodology. In addition to these duties, he authored numerous A. M. Best industry publications and research reports, contributed to its information products and developed industry statistical studies.

He is a frequent speaker at industry conferences on strategic, enterprise risk management and ratings issues.
